テキサス州ダラスに拠点を置くNPO法人DJCW (Dallas Japanese Career Women)では、7月２６日から8月27日の１か月間、津田塾大学から１３名のインターン生を受け入れ、３つのチームに分かれてプロジェクトを実施しました。今回は英語英文学科に在籍する望月京佳さんが体験談を寄稿して下さいました。

挑戦から得た経験
インターンシップは私にとって大きな挑戦でした。馴染みのない活動内容に不安を感じていましたが、自分の世界を広げたいという思いから参加を決めました。1ヶ月間のインターンプログラムを通して、DJCWの方々やインターンシップメンバーから多くの刺激を受け、成長することができました。
インターンプログラムでは、主に２つの活動を行いました。１つ目は、オンライン座談会でのファシリテーターとしての活動です。特に、場の雰囲気や状況を見てとっさに適切な言葉をかけることに苦労しました。しかし、ペアを組んだ方の話し方を真似したり、情報を整理しながら話を聞いたりすることで、柔軟な対応ができるようになりました。２つ目は、チームでの活動です。私はファンドレージング&アワード企画立案チームに所属し、DJCWに適合するアワードや寄付方法を調査しました。アワードの調査では、DJCWに条件が合うものを見つけることが難しく、海外のアワードを調べたり、検索方法を工夫したりしました。ファンドレージングの調査では、YouTubeを利用した寄付方法を担当しました。毎週のミーティングでチームに調査状況を報告し、様々な視点で情報の取捨選択をすることができました。

本インターンプログラムに参加するにあたり、私は「強みを活かして活動に貢献する」と「海外で働く女性から多くの話を聞く」という目標を立てていました。１つ目の目標に関しては、プレゼンテーション資料作成や独自の視点からのリサーチを行ったことで達成することができました。しかし、2つ目の目標は十分に達成することができませんでした。オンライン座談会ではファシリテーターの仕事で手一杯になり、担当以外の登壇者に質問をする余裕がありませんでした。また、チームの担当をしてくださったBrooks星子さんには業務に関する質問ばかりしてしまい、お仕事の話をあまり聞くことができませんでした。今後は、質問したいことを書き出した上で、積極的にお話を聞いていきたいと思います。
インターンシップに挑戦したことで、普段の生活では経験できない多くのことを経験することができました。DJCWの方々の「活動を楽しむ」という心持ちを基盤に、伸び伸びと活動に参加し、新たな世界に飛び込むことができました。プログラムを提供してくださったDJCWの皆さん、ともに活動したインターンシップメンバーの皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。
Experience I Gained from the Challenge
The internship was a big challenge for me. I worried about the activities that were not familiar to me, but I decided to participate in the program because I wanted to expand my horizons. Through the month-long internship program, I was inspired by the staff of DJCW and the other interns who helped me grow as a person.
In the program, I was involved in two activities. The first is as a facilitator in the Chit Chat Session. I struggled to facilitate conversations in the group that I was assigned. However, I was able to improve my facilitation skills by imitating the way my partner talked and organizing information in my mind. The second was team activities. I belonged to the team that focused on “Fundraising & Awards Planning” and researched the awards and fundraising which are suitable for DJCW. I researched the awards in other countries, but eventually, I needed to change the direction of my research because it was difficult to find awards with best fit for DJCW. I was in charge of fundraising via YouTube. At weekly meetings, we reported our progress on our research, and were able to decide which information was better from various points of view.
I set my goals as “to make contributions to activities utilizing my strength” and “to listen to as many stories as possible from working women abroad” before I joined the program. My first goal was accomplished because I was able to create our team’s presentation materials and to research from my own perspective. However, the second goal was not achieved. I was not able to ask questions to presenters at the Chit Chat Event other than the one at the group that I was facilitating because my hands were full with the facilitation task in the session. Additionally, I could not listen to Ms. Brooks’s story about her work because I did not ask her questions other than those related to my tasks as an intern. From now on, I would like to prepare a list of questions so that I can be ready when I have other opportunities.
The internship is something that I could not experience in my daily life. I enjoyed the internship and it opened a door to a new world thanks to the DJCW staff which embodies their motto, "enjoy activities". I would like to express my gratitude to the DJCW staff members who provided the opportunity to me and to the other interns who worked with me.
